Bringing Home The Bacon

Last week we took a day trip to Vermont. We were going to walk some trails that in the past have been enjoyable. Spring is on the way there but we saw some signs of the Winter that just won't leave. We also had some time to walk the streets of Brattleboro. I love that town. It has so many little shops that run from clothing to herbal fixes. There is no shortage of coffee shops, seems that they all do business. It also hold that 60's charm of flower power. I felt like a 19 year old walking the sidewalk.

Brattleboro has a store that specializes in natural/organic/local foods. We have in the past made purchases on local raised pork and found it to be wonderful. This time I spotted some bacon, and it was love at first sight.


The bacon is packaged in a tight cry-o-vac package and came in several cures. I chose the applewood smoked cure.


Look at that bacon. It was sliced thick with a good fat to lean ratio, with a distinct smell of a heavy smoke. I like my bacon cooked medium to crisp. So the cast iron fry pan was pressed into service and the bacon was soon snapping and popping. When cooked to liking I placed on paper towels to drain.


I enjoyed it with to soft cooked eggs and toast. The true test of a good bacon comes hours later, and this one passed. The bacon had just the right amount of salt. There was no excessive drinking of water. I will be back for more.........

  2. Alan, you have good taste in many things. Brattleboro is a great town. When I was racing bikes a lot, I'd ride there from my home town of Petersham MA. You got to climb many hills between the two places, so it was great for building fitness... and as you noted, there are many awesome coffee shops and natural food stores or coops there for "refueling". I've never fished near there (outside of rivers south of the border in MA... but some of the streams that we would ride by on days that we'd head west or north of Brattleboro looked awesome!

      Will if you head west on route 9 and drive into the Green Mountain National Forest you'll find some good looking water.
      It's a wonderful area to walk and bike. The drawback you'll have to make your own coffee.

  3. Sounds like a neat little town to spend the day in , gotta love those places where time has seemingly stood still for years (we could use a few more of them around actually). And YES...that's some goood looking bacon!

  6. That is best brand of bacon! I've had it before many times, and the best one in my opinion is the fruitwood smoked one.

    When my wife and I travel we always look for those unusual stores or shops that sport outstanding meats and can goods; rattlebore would be one of those places.That bacon if rated from 1 to 10 would be a 20 for me!!! Do you guys ever purchase can goods on any of your outings? We purchased some corn relish when were in Ashville recently and found it to be exceptional . Enjoyed the post!
