Wild brook trout, and a glass rod.

Back in March or so I purchased a Cabela's Glass Rod, a 5'9" 3wt the rod was on sale for 79.95, a good deal in my eyes. So I now have fished this rod since March and have come to the conclusion that the designer of this series of rods was a small stream angler. This rod has performed to the highest level. It has cast everywhere I want it to, a roll cast is no issue, and that is a cast that is used frequently on these little waters. The rod really shines with a dry fly, but I have fished wets and streamers very effectively. I highly recommend this rod.

Yesterday was a nice outing with the glass rod on a blue line in eastern Connecticut. It was a very humid morning, with clouds and rain showers mixed in. The sun poked out at times and seemed to make it feel worse.

The stream was in wonderful shape with the flow through many of the pools very good. Clarity was through the roof so for every move made by me was spotted by the residents. Water temps were 60 and it felt good as I dipped my hat in the stream to wet it and cool me off.

Some of the trout were in the mid to tail sections of the pools but many were also in the plunges at the head of the pool.

The brook trout were nicely colored in this stream. Several were in the look of pre spawn, with bright orange bellies and vibrant fins. They were quite acrobatic and leaped many times.

Places like these are what the little glass 3wt was designed for......

and also these.

It's the only rod I've fished with this season. The streams are in decent shape and pushing some cold water.

Theresa they are awesome when wet with rain. Some of them are waist high.

Mel it's a rod for fly fishermen who love to fish. You can find some pretty good deals out there. The only problem is you have to dig through a lot of crap to find them.

I think you have mention this in a previous post but what brand fly reel are you using with the glass rod? Another outstanding stream, and as always the brook trout really shine. Thanks for sharing

Bill, it's a TFO BVK series 0 reel. The stream is prime New England brook trout water.

  6. I haven't fished any of Cabela's glass rods, but in my opinion, glass was made and enduring for a reason.

Howard they are so much more sensitive than graphite, and they cast beautifully.

  7. I have that same rod, but in its earlier 50th anniversary rendition. Its an outstanding stick for the price. I'm very glad they decided to re-release for countless others to enjoy.

Brad I've had others tell of the 50 th annv rod, and they all say it's a gem.
I to am happy for the reintroduction of a glass rod that's very affordable and performs so well.
