"Good Morning Folks"...enough or to much, minimum or maximum...what did I forget, and I'll never need that. Those are some of the thoughts that we as fly fishers ponder, I know the first question is one I'm always tossing about. Now is that to much eggs, or potatoes should I omit the sausage? Oh man. Well I've got a few more...perhaps you have the same thoughts.
On a recent trip to the Cape I carried my usual compliment of gear. Several boxes of flies, and two rods of different sizes. All that was needed is shown above. This has been the case for every trip I've made there. "Enough is some times to much".....
A local small stream..enough water for sure, a nice deep gentle pool, it's sure to hold a fish or two, then why fish the skinny riffle below?
I love tying flies. Those beautiful Rangeley streamers, classic Catskill patterns that are so exquisite, Bergman wet flies so beautiful, but.....Who can argue with the fly pictured here. Thread body, and a turn or two of hackle. Enough to catch a fish most any where.
Here's one thing I'll never have enough of....this beautiful almost unique colored brook trout was taken in a small Connecticut stream.
Some "food for thought" folks.
I will take an order of the eggs, home fries and sausage.

Nature is quite the artist.
I believe gear is something that we just use to talk about and fiddle with between trips to the river. Other times it's used to mentally "correct" bad habits and perceived obstacles. Honestly, a simple outfit and an Altoids can with a handful of flies can work on any river in the country, if you want it to.

Alan, the breakfast looked so good I got up from my computer and made some of the same,somehow mine didn't look the same. As far as gear goes I don't think you need that white fly rod,you should send it to me for safe keeping, ha ha. Wonderful post Alan,the Brookie looks very heathy. Thankyou.

Brad it might not have looked the same but I'll bet it tasted just as good.
Your just might take that rod and catch one of those 26" Ed Shenk Letort browns with it and then it's good bye little fly rod.

Bill it seems that they will key in on small flies at this time of year....
"Enough is some times to much". Sure as hell, the one you want is still at home. I've had this happen so many times, I have a "fly bag" with all my fly boxes in it. Maybe I don't carry them all on me, but they are close at hand. Like money and fun, you can't have too many flies.

I'm a minimalist by nature except when it comes to sausage, eggs and potatoes, flies, fly rods and reels. Love the brookie!

ReplyDeleteI would really like to know how many flies you carry when you are fishing small streams. I bet you could get by with just one box if it had room for a couple of nymphs, some soft hackles, a streamer or two, and, of course, you favorite dry fly....... As I have gotten older, simplicity is where it is at for me....

I probably carry far less now then I did in the past. I'm sure I could whittle that down.
Without a doubt, brookies are the most beautiful fish. My Carpatho Russian heritage would cause me to increase the onion and paprika in your home fries and perhaps substitute a salted horn, for toast.

John I think that onions and potatoes frying in a pan is one of life's greatest smells, and that flavor in the finished product is hard to beat. The drawback is the "burps". Paprika is usually used when I have it. Now I'm hungry.
