A Spring Day

Early April, the skies were clear, a gentle breeze was moving the air ever so slightly. The woods were opening and a scent of fir and damp earth were picked up. Along a stream bank daffodils are seen almost in bloom, how they got there is a mystery. Birds are ever so vocal and wild turkey's are now gobbling. These are wonderful times to be about the forests.

A small stream flows quietly. Below a little plunge in the calm sunlit bank miniature black nosed dace can be seen darting, looking for cover I suspect. A bit closer to the log jam that caused the plunge is a twist of water that causes a surface disturbance. Frothy water full of oxygen catches everything that's pulled in and causes it to be stunned and disoriented. It is in this location that a brook trout waits and gobbles up all that's presented.

These are the days we have waited for....I hope you can take advantage of a few.

  1. That is a beautiful little jewel that you are holding in your hand. I hope that I'll get a chance to fish for brook trout some time in the future.
    Cheers,
    Steve.
PS Today I went fishing in the Badger Creek at the end of my garden. Water low and clear despite the rain we had yesterday. The only activity was the little galaxiad minnows that belted a small stimulator. Those little guys are game and punch above their weight. I might have to try a tiny dry fly and see if I can hook them, but it would have to be tiny!

Steve I find that small fish will try to put big flies in their mouth's. I love to watch them slash at the fly.
It's good to hear all's well in OZ.

  2. I wonder if a small streamer representing a Black Nosed Dace would work? Just an idle mind thinking..........

Mel I'm sure those mini-dace are a part of the brookies diet.

  5. Alan,
This post is yet another beautiful example of Conn.'s unbelievable natural beauty! It seems as if spring is springing up well in your neck of the woods! The brookies you hold are liquid beauty almost surreal in their appearance as they are held temporarily above their element!
    Absolutely wonderful!

Doug the natural world is coming alive, and I'm happy to be a part of it. After a long winter it's good to see some color in the woods and streams.

    2. There's still some in the woods and the pile from the plowing in my driveway..lakes and ponds are still partially ice covered but the ice that's left is getting pretty black. I'd like to get out and do some trolling for salmon along the ice/open water line with my fly rod and streamers but that won't happen this weekend. The boat is still undercover in the garage and I'm heading Downeast for an Easter gathering..Next week hopefully..

    3. Mike, trolling streamers foe landlocks, that is "classic" Maine. I hope your Easter gathering is all the best.
