Sage Rod, Yellow Sallies And A Spider

For close to ten years this Sage rod has sat in my rod rack. It's a splendid piece, and I fished it for several hours yesterday. The rod is a 7' 2 piece for a 3wt line. It has a copper finish which I think is beautiful. The cork handle is flawless and very comfortable. While it can be fished on small streams I purchased the rod to fish on the Farmington river where I fished it yesterday. It did everything I asked of it.

Yellow Sallies...waiting to give these a workout. Tied on size 12 and 14 hooks.

A "spider"....

  1. So Allen, as a loyal follower of your blog, I know you have a "couple" of fly rods. LOL Don't we all?
Which one is your favorite and why would you wait so many years to fish the Sage?
Thank you for your terrific blog.

Prior to my getting Cane and Silk fiberglass rods which are my favorites. My go to rods were an Orvis Superfine "Small Stream Special" a 7' 5wt and a St. Croix Avid 6' 3wt. I really can't give an answer to that Sage question. I'm happy I did.

  2. Amazing photography Alan. Interesting on that Sage. I have a basic Sage, Vantage I believe is the line up name. It's a pleasure to fish. That one is a slowish to medium action, it almost feels like glass. While it fishes any fly... something about it just screams "dry flies please"! Like that beaded spider - gorgeous!

Will this Sage model is also a bit on the slow side. I haven't tried streamers but dries and soft-hackles work well with it. That shot did come out pretty nice.

  3. Yellow is good whether in the North East or the West.

Mark yellow like brown is a basic color, especially for brook trout.

  4. Alan, my dad has a Sage TXL 3wt 7'6" with the same finish. I must say it's a pretty sweet casting rod. I wish it was a 6'-6'6" for the water I like to fish. Deadly looking dries too. Looking forward to the report. Cheers.

Matt I love the finish on that rod. Looking a their website I couldn't find one similar. 6'6" is a good length for small streams. I used those dries twice and a poor response...stay tuned.

  5. Hi Alan, I too have a Sage Cu finish, graphite rod that I haven't used in years. My taste has changed and I no longer care for fast action fly rods. My current favorite, go to outfit, is a 7 1/2 ft HI, Tonka Queen with a Terenzio 6 wt DT artificial silk line spooled on a Medalist 1494. I'm also a fan of Rod Serling.

John I don't feel my FLi is that fast. Your set up seems like a fine combination. Rod Serling I agree with you and also Alfred Hitchcock..

Looking forward to the report on Spider and Yellow Sallies---I had success yesterday with your Soft Hackles---did a post but give no size and color---but I did say the fly that got the attention of the trout was the hackle---thanks for sharing

Bill I'm glad the soft-hackles worked for you. They are very effective flies. I'll get over to your site and check out your post.
