Most of us have traditions in our families that we hold on to deeply. And when holidays come around there are those special traditions that are dear to us.
I usually start the 4th with a fishing venture at a small stream, that will last only a few hours. Then it's back home to do some grillin', watch some baseball, maybe some reading, and just spending some time with those who are close to me.
This year I woke up somewhat late, 7am, grabbed a Green Mountain Nantucket Blend coffee, the necessary fishing items and was off. I arrived at the stream and the sun was already becoming my enemy. This stream is a bit tricky with the bright sun.
I walked along, tossing the fly, in most of the favorable runs and pools. No takes.
I fished a hour or so and had made up my mind to accept defeat and go home.
The last few drifts along an undercut, where the stream still remained some what dark, a flash came "forth" but missed the fly. This will no matter how many times it will happen gives me a great feeling. I sent that fly back through
that run a few more times with no response. Not giving up on my best shot of the morning, I sent it back through. This time the fish was not to be denied, He slammed the bug and the handsome brown came to hand. That was the only fish of the outing. I walked back to the car very content to have had the enjoyment of the mid morning trout.
We have a small farm close by, and he produces the best sweet corn that's around.
A few weeks ago we stopped in and asked when the corn would be ready. The answer was July 10th.
Yesterday Jeanette and I took a ride to the farm to pick up some summer squash.
Upon entering the sales area we noticed the Corn. What a pleasant surprise. I asked when the first pickings started and was told the day before.
Fresh picked native sweet corn. The First of the Season
A few other items that made it to the grill.
And while the main family gathering was on Saturday, Jeanette and I enjoyed this Fourth of July with each other.
I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday.
Hey Alan....I am glad the trip brought "a fish to hand".
ReplyDeletea nice post holiday read.

Ed,
ReplyDeleteThanks.
In the back of my mind was the thought that there was to be no fish today. It's truly luck.
aljack,
Thanks buddy.
The Cape beckons......
Looks like you did it right! The corn looks fantastic. nice fish too!
ReplyDeleteSometimes it only takes one fish to make the day a success.
ReplyDeleteLike you there is a great little local farm close to my house that has the "best sweet corn" as well. A true American dinner.
Nicely done.
Dog gone it, Looks like Wisconsin there. Only in Wisconsin we would have a picture of a beer or cocktail ! Looks Great

I love the silver flash too. Some times I just watch fish rolling for nymphs under water and you can see a flash every few seconds. Most of the time they are sucker fish but it is still neat to see.
ReplyDeleteI always am content to say well it was a nice day out on the stream....but any fish always makes it that much nicer! Thanks for the post.
ReplyDeleteSavage,
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Native corn will be on the menu many times.
George,
Thanks.
Very true on the one fish.
This time of year we have to support the local farmers.
John McArdie,
ReplyDeleteThanks.
There was a beverage,... didn't make the photo though.
Kev2380,
Thanks.
Love the flash.
Way to stick it out. I like to refer to those type of fish as hope trout. I don't really care if I don't catch something but am always hoping with just one more cast :) Thanks for the great food pics. That sweet corn looks like it is perfectly ripe. I'm going to guess Ice Tea for beverage? Sounds good to me with that feast. Thanks for sharing. Tight Lines.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a perfect fourth of july.

We had some local corn this weekend as well and it was incredible. Amazing for this early in the summer. Glad it was here though because there is nothing like it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.

Kiwi,
ReplyDeleteThat's so true. Fishing is a wonderful feeling, catching one just enhances the feeling.
Trout Magee.
Thanks.
This farmer knows his corn.
Iced tea was the beverage of choice.
Jan Olsen-Nauen,
ReplyDeleteThanks.
I don't believe it could have been better.
Passinthru Outdoors,
When you first bite into that native stuff, that nasty winter is pushed so far into the closet and forgotten.
Native corn...Native trout...what more can one ask for?? Glad you enjoyed the day.
