That Crazy Fly

Happy St. Patrick's Day. I hope you are enjoying you Irish Bangers for breakfast with some lovely fried potatoes...and may your corned beef dinner be the best.

This is a post about a crazy fly and the day's of last April fishing it. I hope you'll enjoy the change in scenery, Spring as opposed to Winter which is getting very old.

I may attempt to get out on the water today and perhaps manage to bring one of these to hand...using that crazy fly.

My corned venison is about a day away from being fully cured. I'm slated to enjoy it on Sunday...stay tuned.

  2. Alan, I dont know what you call it - or if "That Crazy Fly" is what you call it... But that fly was my best brookie dry last year. Why did I even try it? YOU. Saw it in the jaw of a fish you posted last year, so I tied a couple, and they were MONEY. Great little fly!

Will, the mini-stimi fooled many fish for me also.
Not a classic Catskill pattern but a good all around fish taker.

  3. Alan, it's supposed to be 80 here in Colorado tomorrow so I'm getting out. To celebrate the occasion I'll tie a few tonight and give them a try. Of course that will be after my once a year corned beef and cabbage dinner!

      Enjoy that dinner.

Ryan it's very close to an Ausable caddis. Brook trout love a good caddis.

  5. Apt name for the fly. Also reminds me of a Stimulator as someone mentioned above.

With all that hackle and elk hair, I bet it floats like a boat!

I like to call it a mini-stimi....and it floats very well with good visibility.

  7. Best venison I ever had was a road kill up in Wallingford. I came by, in my truck, after a deer was killed by a car and the police asked if I wanted it. The deer likely was recently living on corn from the local corn fields. Sounds like your corned venison will be so good "it will make your brains fall out". A case of pre and post mortem corning.

John I knew a motel owner in PA who lived off roadkills. They even soak the bloody battered parts in salt water to remove the clots and pieces of splintered bones.
You are going to love seeing that plate of corned venison, with cabbage and potatoes.
I actually love the next day hash.

  8. I love that little fly. To me it brings to mind an emerger with wings coming out and over the back. Another fly tying idea for me to try out.

    2. I hit the lower Swift River today. Amazing amount of stoneflies had hatched. Piled up on snow banks, clinging to my waders, surprisingly the brookies weren't going after them. A nice brown was, but I couldn't connect with him.

    3. Sam, glad to hear of your Swift outing.
Fishing this time of year can be frustrating.
Was there shelf ice to deal with?

Ralph they do tend to like those flies that are shaggy, buggy, unnatural and weird body colors.
