While browsing a local Cabela's I noticed a rod that was marked down, actually several marked down. But this model caught my eye, especially the bottom line price. I picked it up to check it out a little closer and to get the feel of it. I noticed it was a 2wt, and only 5ft. It was 2 piece and had a cork reel seat. The blank was a nice olive color and the cosmetic stuff seemed OK. The rod is Cabelas TQR, I guess that means tight quarters rod. I'm going to pair it up with a few reels to see what balances, and give it a test today. Another nice feature is the cloth bag and hard tube, along with the mark down price of $76.00.
I'm interested to see how that rod works out. Did you sign up for Cameron's rod loaning program at Fiberglass Manifesto? I'm gonna try it.

I'll give you a report soon. I'll check that out.
I have the TQR 7ft 2wt. I thought the price was the most amazing part, until I casted it! This is my go-to rod for chasing Brookies now. You will enjoy it thoroughly.

You can't beat the price. Small streams and the rods you use to fish them will take a beating, so price is important.
Rod looks sweet! I just got a 5 ' on Tues! Love the short stix!

Was the rod a TQR?
No tqr. I got the tfo. Its a half weight 5' 3 piece. Packs down to 22" for hiking. Maybe if my wife loosens up the chore list this weekend I might get to try it for a review on my blog. Have fun! TL
DeleteBrk Trt, yes I too admire the Cabelas TQR rod. Its a great feeling rod in your hand don't you think?
ReplyDeleteI own a Cabelas Clear Creek 7' 1wt that I really for those those small streams & I wouldn't want my little 1 wt rod taking a back seat. I do really like the idea of the 5'ft length that the TQR brings.
There are a lot of GREAT deals all over on fly rods this time of year, and you can really make a score as you just did on your new TQR. Well Done!
I'll enjoy your up coming report on your new fly rod addition.......Phil
DRYFLYGUY,
DeleteThanks. When I first picked it up I loved the feel of it. I think it's going to be OK.
Really a good bargain Alan! I like shorter rods when fishing small streams. It's just more fun than with a longer rod. You'll have great moments coming with this new rod after you're done eating will say... Thanks for sharing!

I'm waiting to fish a few of those little creeks where the brush can be a little pain in the a##. Should work well there.
Congratulations on hitting on a treasure while you were browsing at Cabela's. I am not familiar with this rod series, but, look forward to reading what you think after using it for awhile. Unreal price for rod, plus, case!

It was like a garage sale. All of a sudden one finds a real bargain.
I've been eyeing those rods up myself, looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it. Your food pictures always look delicious.

They have several sizes in the series, and should handle a variety of streams.
Looks like a trip to Hartford is on the list

Be careful, one must have discipline when entering such places.
Looking forward to your review Brk Trt.

I'll post a first report very soon.

ReplyDeleteI wish we had a Cabelas here instead of the Bass Pro. I have the Temple Fork 7 1/2 ft. 3 wt. and really like it. I use it on the tailrace sometimes--extremely light and sensitive. I know the 5 ft. will be good for those small streams you fish. That is a great price for that type fly rod. The food is out of bounds as Guy Fieri would say----thanks for sharing
