Back at it again this week visiting a couple of more streams to see how they held up during low water times of August -September. The first stream is a high gradient, big boulder type in certain sections. It's flow now is perfect and I was quite pleased on the reception my dry fly received. There were times when it took strikes on several successive drifts. It was nice to see the little pockets holding so many brookies. Keep in mind that these fish were small but they were strong and beautiful.
In this pool I thought I would pluck a monster out of, and I did. Keeping in mind that monster may be a stretch. Is that not a gorgeous pool.
Now this is a small stream brookie. Happy I was.
That hemlock thing again. Here is where I ran into the land owner. A friendly fellow. Permission granted and he told me of another stream that I could fish. That stream was about 10 miles away from where we were but I will check it out in the next few weeks.
And in that hemlock pool I found this guy. I left stream 1 content that the brookies survived the summer.
Stream #2...looks good. One issue I noticed right off was the amount of woody debris. Now this was an issue for me but I'm sure the brook trout loved it.Floating leaves were also a bit of a problem.
In a plunge pool I found this jewel. I know it's not visible but he had a pronounced hump on his back. This humpback is a trait I've found on the brook trout in Maine. Another stream I'm satisfied did not suffer to much, and should be fine going forward.
A security issue, a little insurance. That little black "O" ring you see on the reel foot...peace of mind. Thanks Jack.
Streams look good, weather looks good, I see many good posts in the future. Thanks for the encouragement comment. I'll keep everyone updated.ReplyDelete
Mark short range forecasts look good so I hope for a good November.
Glad to see your streams and brookies in good shape. It is also refreshing to see property owners allowing access to those little gems. In some portions of NJ the best wild trout waters are private and there have been some inconsiderate anglers that have ruined access to many private waters by leaving a mess. I am very thankful for our County, State, and Federal parks and forests for access to my favorite fish. Most of the wild trout streams are very lightly fished when compared to the mid-sized stocked waters.ReplyDelete
Great pictures and beautiful trout - you are very fortunate and thanks for sharing!
Pat most landowners are pretty good. I can understand them not opening their land for the reasons you state. But I believe if they would just talk to the angler they would soon know that most of us do not trash their lands. I appreciate all of the streams I fish.
That glade and stream look picture perfect. The colours of the autumn foliage look superb and are well matched by those of the brookies getting ready for the nuptials.
We have been inundated with rain since the end of September, just as the weather fairs up we have more down pours and the rivers swell once again! The weather looks like it might dry up from Monday, so hopefully I will get onto the river next weekend. In the mean time keep those post coming.......
Alistair in some streams the nuptials have been a bit late. Might be the lack of water in some that has slowed things down.
I recall you were in a drought for awhile. Mother nature has now turned things around as she often does.
Wow, a quality brook trout taken; yes I was wondering about the leaves. Thanks for sharing
Yes Bill to see such nice brookies coming from those streams was a joy. The leaves will be coming down today. Weather calls for heavy rain and strong wind.
Good news that both streams are A-OK. I am glad the landowner you ran into was friendly and gave permission to fish. Nice of him to tell you about the other stream 10 miles away which I hope pans out as another gem for you.
Unreal how beautiful the brook trout are this time of year. That hump back trout is really something. Man that is a nice fish!
Sam I was surprised when that gent said good morning instead of "get the hell out of here"...I'm anxious to check that stream myself. Looking at it on the map it looks good, now lets see what is in it.
