A Few Good......

Since last Monday I have fished three different streams in various parts of the state. We have experienced a mild stretch of weather and the brookies have responded well to it. Most of the streams have shed any remnants of ice but a few have some that seem to hang on. Most of the brookies were found in winter holding places but a few of them were in those wild water areas. I wish I really knew what makes a brookie move from a comfortable place and choose to go to what is a unfriendly area. In this section I hooked fish in the head and tail of the run/pool. The brookies took wet flies.

A typical jewel from this stream.

I saw several of these clinging to my waders.

I fish this stream several times a year. It's a consistent producer of brook trout, but it looks like it could do better. No explanation for the low amount of fish.

But in a couple of hours of peace and beauty and brook trout like this I find myself greatly rewarded.

Some fried zucchini for lunch...

Joe those days last week were so enjoyable. Next week looks good with the exception of a few showers.
I wish I could tie flies like that. I purchased it in the Catskills.

I did not know of this. I'll see if I can obtain a copy.

How I wish I had a stream like that to fish here today. Heavy rains has rivers and lakes at full pool here. More rain forecast for next week; ready for summer!! Thanks for sharing

Bill we have been getting ample rainfall here, but not like you folks in the south. I guess it's a case of feast or famine.

    2. Your fried zuchini, Alan, brought to mind a dish my mother used to make. Fried cabbage (kapusta) based. It goes like this.

Cut up a small head of green cabbage into 3/4 inch strips. Cut up a large onion into slices. Saute in a skillet with butter leaving it still and stirring infrequently so the mix carmelizes and browns slightly. Add cooked elbow macaroni and stir. A lenten dish we call "Halushki".

John that recipe is very much like what my mother in law made. She would also use salt pork in it.

  6. That place looks like a real pleasure to fish, Alan, open as it is. I bet that fried zucchini hit the spot. Man I love that in the summer when our garden is producing.
