"Henri", Bamboo And "Gagootz"

"Got Water"?...yes we do. The streams of Connecticut have been doing well this summer thanks to mom nature providing ample rainfall at the right times.Just this past week during a night-early morning rain drop I registered  4". Other parts of the state recorded in the 6" range. Now I told this Sunday we are about to have a hurricane make landfall in the state. Rain is a concern now because of the already saturated ground. This along with high winds could be a disaster. Trees will come down. I hope that just maybe the storm will track out to sea, we shall see folks. Get prepped today....

It has been two years since i was gifted a beautiful bamboo fly rod. I have fished this rod many times in that time and my pleasure only grows with each cast. Just yesterday while fishing it I made a cast that seemed to go heading in the wrong place. It was corrected by me but it felt as if the rod had corrected it. I know it sounds strange but that's how  it felt. The rod is so forgiving and so sensitive. A 4" brookie is an absolute monster on the rod. I keep the bamboo rod in a safe place. It hangs in it's sock in the closet. And every morning as reach in to get my clothing it seems to say "are we going fishing"...it has been a pleasure fishing bamboo.

Fried zucchini aka "gagootz"...I love this stuff. Take it and layer it with sauce and cheese and bake it until it's browned and bubbly. Then place it on a crusty Italian roll and you have a meal.

  1. Great looking meal Alan. Get your glass rod fixed yet?

Went out yesterday for stockers on a lake. Strange year, slow even though they just put them in a few days ago.

Bill no i have not. Much to do and I must prioritize or else nada gets done. Maybe they have to adjust to the lake water. I know here they will not stock during the summer months.

  2. Alan,
It looks like Henri is heading right for you. I hope it does not get too severe. Hunker down and stay safe.
Lay in an ample supply of Gagootz to get you through.

Joe my concern is the high winds. We have dealt with prolonged power failures [8 days] and it's not pretty. I have one in the garage and that should hold me.

  3. Morning Alan. What length and weight is that bamboo rod? And what line are you casting on it? I've been fishing a red oak 8ft fly rod I built a few years ago. Casts well with a Sylk brand line. I'm sure there's better rods out there, but making a rod from scratch and catching a fish on it is wonderful!

John it's 5'1" and is made to handle a 2-3 wt line. The maker made 3 like it, named them "Small Stream Reflections" the one i have is #2of 3. He also gave me a silk fly line, I have not used it. Perhaps I'll try it out this fall. The line I have on it is a RIO Trout...wf3f it works great.

  4. Bamboo rod and poison ivy!

It looks like Henri is aimed straight at us. Down on the shoreline we only got about 1/2 inch of rain earlier in the week. Another inch would be good tomorrow but hopefully not 10!

Is that what that stuff is...Shawn there is a story behind that pic, to long to tell it now maybe in another post.
The whole state looks to get hit with heavy rain. Hang on brookies.

Mark what a shame. That rod must have had some stories attached to it. Do you know about how old that rod was?

  6. Hi Alan

I have no doubt that we will be seeing the tail end of 'Henri" in a week or so's time here in the UK.

In the mean time, the streams up here in the borders of Scotland are at prime levels. We arrived on Friday afternoon and had family with us yesterday (when there was a really good downpour) and today (traditionally no fishing in Scotland on Sunday!). We are off walking tomorrow but I hope to get a few hours on the Dye Water tomorrow evening. Then it will be a full day on the Whiteadder Water on Tuesday. St Abbs and Coldingham (with lunch at a fantastic little seafood/ shellfish shack) on Wednesday with another couple of hours on the Dye Water before we head home on Thursday ready to batten down the hatches for the "Henri's Tail" next week.

    Take and stay safe

    Alistair

Do you own and fish bamboo? I know a mutual friend of ours,Humberto does. The heavy part of the storm has past and now only heavy rain. So far so good.

  9. Thank you for the copy of your wonderful book I won in the drawing. I really enjoy your pictures and discussions about wet flies. My 'brook trout' are blue gills and my wet flies are winged black gnats.

Richard I'm glad you like the book. Wet flies are a top story here. Many feel they are the ultimate way to catch fish. Blue gills are fine sport on the fly many a day I spend chasing them.

  10. Amazing how much water we have had this summer - it's been a long time since I've seen streams so consistently high (not falling to puddles after a big rain storm) due to high water tables this late in the summer. It's great though!

Will it has been a blessing. There were years whens the streams were rock gardens. I'm looking forward to cooler weather and orange bellied brookies.

    2. Alan, what leader(s) have you found to work best with that rod?
